Comment For Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows Film VOST
Name :
Bill Zwecker / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
Take one part 3-D visual bombast, add a healthy dose of non-stop action and sprinkle in one helluva silly storyline - plus those fast-talking, even faster-moving hard-shell siblings - and you have the essence of [TMNT: Out of the Shadows].
Name :
Jim Slotek / Alias : Toronto Sun
Being a human in this movie is a fairly thankless task.
Name :
Brad Wheeler / Alias : Globe and Mail
School will soon be out, and so will the children for which this fast-paced CGI exposition is made.
Name :
Andrew O'Hehir / Alias : Salon.com
I had to draw on my own ninja training and reflect intensively on the transitory nature of all phenomena, just to fend off the profound yearning for death.
Name :
Adam Graham / Alias : Detroit News
There's enough turtle power to please kids and fans of the original series.
Name :
A.A. Dowd / Alias : AV Club
What the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lacks is not fidelity, but a spirit of genuine boyish fun - the sense that anyone involved saw more than a very specific shade of green in the freshly digital scales of these 30-year-old characters.
Name :
Wesley Morris / Alias : Grantland
Turtles fans might have been looking for their own Avengers. They get Alvin and the Chipmunks on performance enhancers and mass-market pizza instead. In Hollywood, history repeats first as farce, then as marketing.
Name :
Kyle Smith / Alias : New York Post
The comedy-action mash-up is as weird as if the Dark Knight took a break from belting the Joker to plug Pizza Hut and bang out a hiphop beat on his nunchucks.
Name :
Jesse Hassenger / Alias : AV Club
Out Of The Shadows is every bit as mercenary, nonsensical, and loud as a typical Michael Bay production (the pop soundtrack cues may be even louder, and make even less sense).
Name :
Edward Douglas / Alias : New York Daily News
As with the best popcorn flicks, Out of the Shadows offers plenty of mindless entertainment and mind-numbing silliness.
Name :
Peter Travers / Alias : Rolling Stone
a torturous mindf-k for any sentient being over the age of infancy.
Name :
Christy Lemire / Alias : ChristyLemire.com
It's essentially a Transformers movie - a Michael Bay production complete with mass destruction, urban panic, white-hot lighting, inane quips, product placement, explosions and, well, Megan Fox.
Name :
Devan Coggan / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
There's a heavy-handed emphasis on the importance of brotherhood and being true to yourself, but mostly, the emotional stuff takes a backseat to all the pizza, pranks, and flaming garbage trucks that shoot manhole covers like projectiles.
Name :
Drew Hunt / Alias : Chicago Reader
The light, comedic tone is weighed down by unimaginative pop-culture references and half-witted one-liners.
Name :
Tomas Hachard / Alias : NPR
There's no lack of craft here, but there's certainly an absence of character.
Name :
Adam Graham / Alias : Detroit News
"Out of the Shadows" is by no means a really good pizza, but if you liked the last film, it's worth a slice.
Name :
Joe Neumaier / Alias : New York Daily News
Even youngsters may wonder why any hint of charm or fun has scurried away. Those new to the franchise may withdraw their head into their neck, turtle-like.
Name :
Michael O'Sullivan / Alias : Washington Post
Like a well-plated but nutrition-free meal, it registers on the senses while being bad for you.
Name :
Justin Chang / Alias : Variety
Neither a particularly good movie nor the pop-cultural travesty that some were dreading.
Name :
Geoff Berkshire / Alias : Variety
Every bit as noisy, brain-numbing and lowbrow as its predecessor, the Michael Bay production never strays from basic blockbuster formula.
Name :
Justin Lowe / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
Liebesman relies on his genre-film resume to keep events moving at a brisk clip and the motion-capture process employed to facilitate live-action integration with cutting-edge VFX looks superior onscreen .
Name :
Peter Travers / Alias : Rolling Stone
In one way, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a triumph for producer Michael Bay in that it is equally as godawful as his Transformers: Age of Extinction and a hit nonetheless.
Name :
Sandie Angulo Chen / Alias : Washington Post
While this reboot is fun, it's also forgettable and occasionally infuriating.
Name :
Michael Nordine / Alias : TheWrap
The Turtles' place in today's superhero landscape is an odd one, operating somewhere ibetween Marvel's streamlined efficiency and DC's foreboding inconsistency. Out of the Shadows tries to incorporate elements of both and ends up a soupy mess.
Name :
Matthew Lickona / Alias : San Diego Reader
Feels remarkably like it was conceived and created by (as opposed to merely for) 12-year-old boys.
Name :
Peter Howell / Alias : Toronto Star
Not much of an effort is made to differentiate the personalities of the turtles, who all frankly look as grotesque as a Terry Gilliam cartoon.
Name :
Sara Stewart / Alias : New York Post
Despite the title, the wisecracking turtles named for Renaissance painters are never allowed to shine. It's a bummer, dude.
Name :
Tom Russo / Alias : Boston Globe
The repartee, as ever, is weak. Even with all the extra layers of digital detail, it's still tough to keep these four straight.
Name :
Nancy Churnin / Alias : Dallas Morning News
Cowabunga, dudes.
Name :
Tirdad Derakhshani / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
A headache-inducing $135 million sequel to the 2014 blockbuster, TMNT: OOTS becomes intolerable after about 32 seconds.
Name :
Bill Goodykoontz / Alias : Arizona Republic
It's just kind of a mess, as unfocused and immature as the four mutant turtles at its core. Stuff happens, stuff blows up and this is probably a good time to mention that Michael Bay produced the film.
Name :
James Rocchi / Alias : Film.com
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is designed to fill a pipeline, a matter of volume more than quality. It's bland, familiar, lazy and drunk on a deadly mix of nostalgia and unthinking adrenaline.
Name :
Bilge Ebiri / Alias : New York Magazine/Vulture
Your kids may not mind it, but it's more insistent than it is fun.
Name :
James Berardinelli / Alias : ReelViews
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doesn't so much provide brainless enjoyment as it pummels the viewer into submission. "Shell-shocked" is a reasonable description of the experience.
Name :
Cliff Lee / Alias : Globe and Mail
For having gone to the trouble of making a self-descriptive movie called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, its producers seem ultimately unsure about its most basic concept.
Name :
Bruce Ingram / Alias : Chicago Sun-Times
It's pretty much business as usual: one personality trait per turtle (with the most screen time for party-dude Michelangelo), lots of wisecracks, plenty of thin-crust product placement (Pizza Hut this time around), and even a last-minute cowabunga.
Name :
Rafer Guzman / Alias : Newsday
A loud, unattractive and most likely successful sequel to the 2014 hit.
Name :
Michael Sragow / Alias : Orange County Register
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a reboot that plays as if it were made from a starter kit. Everything comes right out of the 2014 blockbuster catalog.
Name :
Soren Anderson / Alias : Seattle Times
If ever there was a movie that should not have been made, this is that movie.
Name :
Kyle Anderson / Alias : Entertainment Weekly
Too-brief thrills only shine a harsher light on the film's laborious pacing and cringeworthy one-liners spilling from the maws of the ninja teens.
Name :
Peter Hartlaub / Alias : San Francisco Chronicle
Your 11-year-old is going to love this film. Then he'll grow up and wonder what he was thinking.
Name :
Mark Olsen / Alias : Los Angeles Times
There is something half-hearted about the entire film, as if those behind it were involved not because they wanted to make it, not because they should make it, but just because they could.
Name :
Nicolas Rapold / Alias : New York Times
Attached to this movie, the title no longer sounds zany; it looks like a series of keywords.
Name :
Rafer Guzman / Alias : Newsday
Rougher and slightly funnier than the 1990 original, but still harmless junk at best.
Name :
Alonso Duralde / Alias : TheWrap
A movie that takes its characters and its premise seriously, until it doesn't, and that operates at two speeds: tortoise (ponderous) and hare (head-spinning).
Name :
Soren Anderson / Alias : Seattle Times
Better title: "When Really Ugly CG Creatures Fight."
Name :
Joshua Rothkopf / Alias : Time Out
This is as generic as Hollywood gets.
Name :
Glenn Kenny / Alias : New York Times
This movie is, it happens, easier to sit through than the 2014 film.
Name :
Lindsey Bahr / Alias : Associated Press
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" is a Saturday morning cartoon on Michael Bay steroids. For the under 12 set, that's fine. For the rest of us? It's something to actively avoid.
Name :
Frank Scheck / Alias : Hollywood Reporter
To say that this installment of the latter series is superior to its predecessor is damning it with faint praise, but it's likely to reasonably satisfy tykes (and certain nostalgic oldsters-you know who you are).
Name :
Amy Nicholson / Alias : L.A. Weekly
If you thought Michael Bay had forgiven Megan Fox for saying he was "like Hitler," this new April O'Neil role is proof he hasn't.
Name :
Barbara VanDenburgh / Alias : Arizona Republic
This one at least seems to know it's stupid and the story, incomprehensible as it is, offers more opportunity for levity, which you sorely need in a movie with a cartoon warthog picking its nose.
Name :
Cath Clarke / Alias : Time Out
Forget cowabunga, this is cowadunga.
Name :
Claudia Puig / Alias : USA Today
Is there a word that means the opposite of Cowabunga?
Name :
Steven Rea / Alias : Philadelphia Inquirer
The kind of cliched, misfit crimefighters-versus-demented villains scenario that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird happily parodied when they came up with the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic books way back in the 1980s.
